The Corporate War Against Adblock Plus
A quick post today.
It seems a lot of websites have joined the corporate bandwagon of disabling their site with a popup against Adblock Plus (never mind the fact I can just disable javascipt in my browser and circumvent all popups altogether (including your meaningless warning)). I just want to point out to all these websites/companies that you’re just pushing me to your competitors. I don’t have to use your service and your prompt to disable adblock plus makes me leave that much faster. If you’re a company relying on revenue from internet ads, you have bigger problems that shouldn’t require paying for the extra manpower to figure out how to EXCLUDE potential clientele. Bear in mind ad blockers only block ads from known ad services. So if website programmed and created their own ad services that served and hosted up their own images, their anti-adblock stance would be unnecessary. And I don’t have a problem with legitimate ads – its the targeted ads that load up that pair of pair of panties my wife just bought I find problematic. In fact this situation has prompted me to install BlockSite (Firefox | Chrome). That’s right, I will go OUT OF MY WAY to never visit your site again because of your stance on something so stupid.
So if you know of a site, share it in the comments with an alternative and I’ll add it to my list.
- Forbes (ANY other news site)
- Salt Lake Tribune (ANY other news site)
- The Weather Channel/weather.com (type ‘weather’ into your Google search), although you can still use the site after you close the popup
- Fox News (ANY other news site), although it’s just a red bar and the site’s still usable
